Stephen Spender has a simple life these days. Nothing like his life and times as a newspaperman in the North of England - reporting on crime. He is not an old man but the realisation that he can now consume the Daily Mail online and order a coffee on an app makes him feel life has left him behind.
His life is now dedicated to his grand daughter, who, at two is a sharp as a button and the one human being who gets to listen to all Stephen's gripes.
Life is an endless round of journeys to the playgroup, listening to the inn inane chatter of the yummy mummies in SW11 and watching Daisy grow up and become less dependent on her doting grandfather.
Daisy sees her single mother in the evenings - she works like a dog doing something in PR.
Life is fairly hum drum, punctuated by small moments of joy... Until one morning over a hot chocolate and a pain chocolat Daisy and Stephen witness something. Stephen doesn't know what he has seen but if he did he would understand its terrible implications. Daisy knows exactly what she saw but is too young to understand its meaning or even the words to describe it. Together, the couple set out on a mystery tour to discover the truth...
